about

This album is a collection of "spontaneous compositions" recorded over the stretch of mid-late 2018 into 2019. For each track I hit record on my handy Zoom H5 recorder and tried to write a standalone piece of music / song (whatever you wish to call them really) that was simply what happened between hitting the record and stop buttons. They are improvisations, simple moments in time, but ones in which I tried to impose a structure, trajectory, and feel that would be consistent and of a piece with itself. Sometimes after hitting stop I immediately hit record and did the next one right away, sometimes I did not. Over the course of some months I did this in many "sessions" and built up a large pool of them.

I created and followed this practice as an act of intention in a time of great upheaval in my life, as I found that it helped me out quite a bit to cycle through these little experiments in capturing a sense of place, and of myself, at regular intervals. I did not workshop any of these pieces, they are not "works in progress" or songs I intend to flesh out or music I will return to at all, though themes and phrases may pop up here and there over time. They are simple attempts at finding order and sense and inhabiting a mood and sound, which was something I sorely needed at a time where little else made sense. I also think I was looking to create some quiet and simple moments when they seemed hard to come by. Maybe they will find you there too.

A quick note: there are no field recordings for any of these songs. Whatever incidental sounds you hear are simply the sounds surrounding me while I played. There are no edits to these tracks, they are captured as they happened minus some adjustment to levels and a small trim at the beginning or end of a track to remove some non-playing time.

I recorded these at the same time as I was following a different process that became my album on Oxtail Recordings called "I live here." You may find it of interest to listen to that record too, as I consider them of a piece in regards to my body of work, for what it is (I tend to work in phases/periods and that was a big one for me). I have an as-of-yet unreleased album of material from that same time that will come out at some point also. If you have any interest in releasing hey go on and reach out. I think it is very good.

Also, many thanks to my good friend Darren Hoyt, who listened to a small collection of these tracks (I recorded at least a hundred of them) and helped pick out this sequence. The track order here is exactly as he put it. I think it is good. Go listen to his music under the name Cerca (also on Bandcamp), it is great.
